A Guide to Reading Aloud to Your Child
Read with fun in your voice.
Build vocabulary by focusing on and talking about new words.
Connect the story to your child's world.
Ask your child questions about the book and encourage them to ask questions.
Make reading part of your everyday routine.
When you read the words, whenever possible, act them out too!
Hold the book so your child can see the pictures.
Make the plot come alive by discussing the illustrations.
Reading Everywhere!
Make text come alive around your home by using a sticky note, index card, or extra piece of paper to label a bath.
Hang the label near a bath and discuss the letters and their meaning with your child. Labeling helps children learn that letters come together to make words and creates a print rich environment in your home.
Pre-Reading Building Block
Sequencing is the skill of putting things in order. Before you begin this activity, brainstorm things you and your child do throughout the day: eat breakfast, get dressed, read books, play outside, take a bath, go to sleep, etc. Draw a picture of each activity on a separate card. Work with your child to put the activities in order from first to last.
Let's Play
The illustrations make it obvious that King Bidgood lived in a different time and culture from us. Using costumes (or make your own!), pretend you and your child are a king or queen. Find music to dance a jig to. Discuss with your child the similarities and differences to your life and King Bidgood’s life.
