Pre-Reading Building Block

Sing “Five Little Ducks” with your child, counting back each verse until the sad mother duck gets

all the ducks back!

Five little ducks went out one day

Over the hill and far away

Mother duck said, "Quack, quack, quack, quack"

But only four little ducks came back

One, two, three, four

Let's Play

Practice counting with your child. Gather 10 items (buttons, cheerios, forks, etc). Point to and count each object. Encourage your child to count on their own, pointing to each item to build one-to-one correspondence. Change the total number of items to practice counting different amounts.
