A Guide to Reading Aloud to Your Child
Read with fun in your voice.
Build vocabulary by focusing on and talking about new words.
Connect the story to your child's world.
Ask your child questions about the book and encourage them to ask questions.
Make reading part of your everyday routine.
When you read the words, whenever possible, act them out too!
Hold the book so your child can see the pictures.
Make the plot come alive by discussing the illustrations.

Make text come alive around your home by using a sticky note, index card, or extra piece of paper to label a cup.
Hang the label near a cabinet and discuss the letters and their meaning with your child.
Labeling helps children learn that letters come together to make words and creates a print rich environment in your home.
Pre-Reading Building Block
Flip through the pages of the book with your child. Point to each character. Label the character with their familial role (dad, sister, grandma, grandpa, uncle, mom, friend, neighbor, baby). For each character, discuss the person in your child’s family who fills the role. For example: “This is grandpa. We call your grandpa Pops.” Skip any family members that aren’t applicable to your family.
Let's Play
Build independence with your child by practicing some of the skills listed in this book.
- Fill a cup with water and help your child to pour it into another cup.
- Set out your child’s shirt and help guide it over their head and arms.
- Cook or bake with your child.
- Encourage your child to turn the pages as you read a book.
- Create a stage and encourage your child to sing their favorite song.
