A Guide to Reading Aloud to Your Child
Read with fun in your voice.
Build vocabulary by focusing on and talking about new words.
Connect the story to your child's world.
Ask your child questions about the book and encourage them to ask questions.
Make reading part of your everyday routine.
When you read the words, whenever possible, act them out too!
Hold the book so your child can see the pictures.
Make the plot come alive by discussing the illustrations.

Make text come alive around your home by using a sticky note, index card, or extra piece of paper to label a dish.
Hang the label near a cabinet and discuss the letters and their meaning with your child.
Labeling helps children learn that letters come together to make words and creates a print rich environment in your home.

Sing the song “Apples and Bananas.” Try it with different vowel sounds.
- I like to eat, eat, eat apples and bananas
- I like to ate, ate, ate ay-ples and ba-nay-nays (long a sound)
- I like to eat, eat, eat ee-ples and ba-nee-nees (long e sound)
- I like to ite, ite, ite i-ples and ba-nigh-nighs (long i sound)
- I like to ote, ote, ote oh-ples and ba-no-nos (long o sound)
- I like to oot, oot, oot oo-ples and ba-noo-noos (oo sound)
Let's Play
Help your child to draw their favorite dinner. Use a piece of paper to draw a circle. Ask the child to pick 3-4 favorite foods. Draw those foods on the plate. Using markers or crayons, encourage your student to color in the food they chose. Discuss each food - What color is it? What does it taste like? Is it sweet or salty? Who makes it?
